To the west of the Steiner site, a small eastern-facing vineyard overlooking Lake Neusiedl. This not so rocky terrain consists of clayey brown soils and is always moist. The sulfur-rich subterranean spring gave the site its old name: Höllesgrund ‑ Hell’s Ground.
Because of the loam content of the soil we planted a cloned selection of our Dürrau Blaufränkisch here in 2007. Since 2013 we have been vinifying the grapes separately in order to learn more about how the loam influences the final product. There is a subtle hint of the typical spice of Balf’s slate soil in the wine, but this is not the primary characteristic. Structured and long on the palate, yet soft and by no means shallow.
