2013 Weninger Blaufränkisch Kalkofen 93

From calcareous Eurendsina soils, the 2013 Blaufränkisch Kalkofen is a remarkably fine red. Fermented on the skins for two weeks and aged for 20 months in 500-liter barrels, this dark-colored red offers a beautifully elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe dark berries and spicy/vegetal aromas. Lovely chalk purity and reduction here. Silky, round and elegant on the palate, this full-bodied, fresh and persistent Blaufränkisch develops a long and intense finish and reveals a very fine tannin and acidity structure. Straight, pure, fresh and elegant. Minty flavors in the aftertaste. Perfect oak management. A remarkably alive and kicking Blaufränkisch – a Must Buy for all freaks of this variety.

2013 Weninger Soproni Kékfrankos Steiner 92+

Weninger’s ruby-colored 2013 Soproni Kékfrankos Steiner offers a lovely elegant and floral-scented bouquet with crystalline gneiss flavors. Firm and full of vitality and freshness, this silky textured and finesse-full red is a remarkably expressive and elegant Blaufränkisch from Sopron (Ödenburg) in Hungary, straight on the other side of Rust at Lake Neusiedl.

2013 Weninger Dürrau 92

Displaying graphite, raw meat and concentrated dark fruit aromas on the well-defined and coolish-mineral nose, the 2013 Dürrau is a full-bodied, silky textured, elegant, fresh and firmly structured Blaufränkisch with pronounced tannins and a remarkable finesse and purity. Great finish.

2012 Weninger Kékfrankos Steiner 92

The 2012 Soproni Kékfrankos Steiner has a dark color and offers a matured and intense bouquet of superripe cherries, graphite, nuts and dried meat. Full-bodied, silky and vital, with finely grained tannins this rare and expressive wine delivers a long and tension-filled finish and reveals a great purity, concentration and mineral freshness. Excellent structure and aging potential. Only 2,500 bottled produced.

2012 Weninger Dürrau 90

From the top vineyard in Horitschon and 50+-year-old Blaufränkisch vines on deep clay soils, comes the dark ruby-colored 2012 Dürrau, a deep and matured red with ripe cherry, graphite and ethereal-tinted cassis aromas, but also some greenish/woody hints on the still reductive nose. Full-bodied, round and intense on the almost smooth palate and with still-firm and slightly bitter tannins, this cru seems a bit overdone and over-extracted to me. It does not fly like the great 2013 Kalkofen. The fruit has lost its primary charm and is pretty matured, intertwined with secondary aromas and some minty flavors. It’s a bit too robust for me, but should go well with stewed dark meat.

2013 Weninger Blaufränkisch Alte Reben Kirchholz 90+

From a vineyard next to the Hochäcker, the 2013 Blaufränkisch Alte Reben Kirchholz roots on clay soils with sandy slate and gravel on the top soil. The cherry-colored wine opens with meaty and toasty dark fruit, graphite and leather aromas on the nose. Intense and dense on the elegant palate this silky textured wine reveals a fleshy concentration and fine but firm and grippy tannins as well as a good freshness with cherry flavors in the aromatic aftertaste. Still too young and a bit astringent in the finish, this wine should be kept rather robust than refined and shall show its talents at the age of five or six years.

2014 Weninger Horitschoner Blaufränkisch 86+

Weninger’s 2014 Horitschoner Blaufränkisch from the Mittelburgenland DAC is a pure, fresh and spicy Lemberger from the village of Horitschon. Still a bit reductive on the nose and provided with dark wild berries this is a silky textured and refreshing red with just 12% alcohol, a nice grip and a straight character. Still leathery and a bit untamed on the palate, this wine goes well with all barbecues and sausages. Very authentic.

2014 Weninger Blaufränkisch Hochäcker 88
Although entirely from the Mittelburgenland, respectively a top single-vineyard in Horitschon, the 2014 Blaufrankisch Hochacker is bottled under the Burgenland origin. Sourced from old vines (35+ years) on iron-rich clay soils, this is a pure and meaty flavored red with dark cherry and berry aromas along with peppery and toasty, but also licorice and clove, flavors. Silky textured and fresh on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, vital and refreshing red with firm tannins and a pithy and robust fruit character. Still young but elegant and with a long and refreshingly aromatic finish with black berry aromas. Excellent purity. If you like Baga, Barbara or Cabernet Franc from the Loire, the Hochäcker is a lovey alternative from Austria’s Blaufränkisch paradise.
